Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany has called for the introduction of a joint league between clubs in Belgium and Holland.

Proposals for a BeNE league have been floating around for some time and the idea is already a reality in the women’s game in the two countries.

The thinking is that clubs in both nations would benefit from the increased competition and exposure, eventually giving rise to higher TV income and greater opportunities in Europe.

"One good thing is that the BeNe league in women’s football is kicking off", Kompany posted on his official Twitter account.

And the league, which is due to get under way in the winter with eight clubs from the two countries competing, has found favour with the defender.

"I think that the Belgian and Dutch league for men should also be merged", he added.

It remains to be seen whether any further progress will be made towards a BeNe league and UEFA are sure to want a say on the matter.
