Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has heaped praise on Jon Flanagan, after the youngster’s impressive displays this season.

The 20-year-old, who has been deployed in the left-back slot by Rodgers after Jose Enrique succumbed to injury, scored his first senior goal for the Reds in their 5-0 mauling of Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane yesterday.

And the manager is hugely impressed with Flanagan, who put in a man of the match performance in the 3-3 draw against Everton in the Merseyside derby last month, and thinks that the starlet’s confidence is ever-increasing.

The Northern Irishman further revealed that only a League One club were interested in taking the England Under-21 international on loan during the summer.

"There was only one club who came in for him on loan, a League One club. No one wanted to take him on loan", the manager explained to his club’s official site.

"He is a terrific boy; he has played for the U21 side, he has played in practice games when there are about two people watching and he has played in pre-season with thousands of people watching – and he doesn't change.

"I thought going back a few games, when he got into the team against Everton, that this was a kid who can handle it.

“Since he came in and played in the derby – and was man of the match against Everton – he has been fantastic.

"His confidence is growing and growing all the time. His goal was a brilliant finish; I'm delighted for him. As a local boy, you could see how much it meant to him and the supporters.”

Flanagan, whose contract with Liverpool runs until 2015, has thus far made six Premier League appearances for the club this season.
