Bayern Munich manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that he succumbed to the fans’ wishes when he let defender Edson Braafheid leave for Celtic on a loan deal. The Dutch 26-year-old has failed to impress the club’s supporters since his switch from FC Twente in the summer, and has been sent to the Scottish giants to rebuild his confidence.
“He was not rated highly by the fans in Munich," said Van Gaal on Bavarian television. “In such a case, it is better to let the player go and leave the club. Edson is an excellent defender. He has just been unlucky here. I really hope the fans in Glasgow help him."
Bayern Munich were busy offloading players in the January transfer window, allowing the likes of Luca Toni, Andreas Otti, and Breno Borges to leave the club without acquiring any new players.
