Fulham are through to the Europa League last 16 after holding reigning champions Shakhtar Donetsk to a 1-1 draw in the Donbass Arena. With a 2-1 advantage going into the second leg, Brede Hangeland’s header against the run of play in the first half, proved vital in snatching a well deserved passage into the next round.
“It feels fantastic. It’s a really, really great achievement for this club and I’m proud to be a part of it,” Hangeland said in the club’s official website after the historic aggregate victory. “It proves how far we’ve come as a team since Roy Hodgson became manager. We’ve beaten one of the top teams in Europe and we’ve achieved that by trusting in the way we play and working hard. It’s been a fantastic team effort so we’re really proud of ourselves.”
Fulham will now face the daunting task of playing football giants Juventus in the next round.
