Manchester City’s Wayne Bridge is expected to be out for about a month after undergoing an operation for a hernia problem. The unlucky left-back has only just returned from a long-term knee injury, and is now set for a spell on the sidelines during a very crucial part of the season, as the race for Champions League qualification heats up.

Bridge had to be taken off in the first-half in the match against Sunderland at the weekend, and his extended absence will start a battle for the vacant left-back spot between Javier Garrido, Sylvinho and the emerging Greg Cunningham.

Manager Roberto Mancini also has the option to deploy Gareth Barry or Joleon Lescott in the position, ensuring that it will be Bridge, rather than the team, that will suffer most from this unfortunate injury.
