Former England coach Steve McClaren has been honoured by his peers in Holland. McClaren, who won the Eredivisie title in Holland this season beat off competition to land the Coach of the Year award. There had been speculation the award might go to Ajax coach Martin Jol, Heracles coach Gertjan Verbeek or Martin Been of Feyenoord.

For McClaren the honour caps a remarkable rehabilitation from a failed spell coaching his country. The former Middlesbrough manager will not be able to compete for the award again next season however, as he had chosen to head to the Bundesliga to take charge of Wolfsburg.

Twente will hope his successor can perform equally well.
