According to reports from Portugal, Benifica youngster Angel di Maria is close to signing for Real Madrid, leaving a host of clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United disappointed. The talented winger has been reported as a primary transfer target of Jose Mourinho, who is expected to replace Manuel Pellegrini as manager of Los Blancos.
Although the Portuguese club have denied any deal being agreed with the Spanish giants, Record claim that Real have paid the 22-year-old’s buy-out clause of €40M, rendering Benfica almost powerless to keep the budding Argentina star.
Di Maria enjoyed his best ever season in the 2009/10 campaign, scoring ten goals in 43 games, and finishing as the player with the most assists as well. Manchester United were also believed to be tracking the winger very closely, but have lost out to the fast-moving Madrid club.
