Chelsea are growing keener than ever on Palermo forward Javier Pastore and could be set to offer the Serie A side €40M for the 21-year-old – but it may not be enough.

Pastore has been identified by boss Carlo Ancelotti as a fine acquisition for the Stamford Bridge side and the race is on to beat a whole host of other interested clubs, including Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Inter to the Argentine’s signature.

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini admitted recently that he had an offer of €50M on the table for Pastore, but could not reveal the identity of the bidding club. Should Zamparini’s claims be accurate, Chelsea would have to at least match that bid.

Another factor which could complicate any move is the fact that Pastore himself has said that, should he leave Palermo, then he will give priority to Barcelona if the Spaniards have a bid accepted.

The Argentine looks likely to be at the centre of the biggest transfer saga of the summer, a tale Chelsea hope will end with Pastore being unveiled at Stamford Bridge.
