Newcastle United look to have stepped up their efforts to tempt Youssef El-Arabi to St. James’ Park according to reports from France. The Caen striker, who can also operate in midfield, declared his intention to leave the Ligue 1 club earlier this month and interested parties are swinging into action.

"I have made my decision and I will leave", said El-Arabi to L’Equipe, despite being under contract with Caen until 2013.

"I have told the leaders of the club my intention, but they know I’m going to keep giving everything until the end of the season."

And Newcastle boss Alan Pardew feels the 24-year-old would be an excellent addition to his side, with an expected asking price of €5M well within the Premier League side’s budget.

Newcastle will be aware however that they face opposition for El-Arabi’s signature, with Everton known to have scouted the forward and several Spanish sides watching the situation closely. Hence the Magpies are stepping up their efforts to ensure the Caen hitman lands in the North East come the summer transfer window.

"There are lots of clubs interested in me, but I have not decided where I want to go yet. I’m attracted to leagues in Spain and England", admitted El-Arabi.

Caen, who know Newcastle are keen, have not yet given up hope of keeping El-Arabi, although the northern French club are under no illusions that slipping down to Ligue 2 would instantly end their chances of doing so; they currently sit inside the relegation zone, albeit on goal difference.
