In-demand midfield starlet Nampalys Mendy has admitted he is flattered by interest in his services from Manchester United, but feels he should stay in France a little longer to continue his development.

Mendy was lined up to tour the Red Devils’ training facilities and Old Trafford, but the 20-year-old is keen to remain in France and favours a switch to Ligue 1 side Nice.

The talented midfielder is out of contract with Monaco and has resisted penning an extension, meaning he is leaving the Stade Louis II.

Mendy has insisted he was not scared by the increased competition at the big spending principality side though.

And he is happy to have aroused Manchester United’s interest.

"This [Manchester United] is the club of my dreams", he told L’Equipe, from his holiday in Marrakesh.

"It proves that I did good things, but I want to stay in France. I’ve already made my choice."

That choice is Claude Puel’s Nice side, at which Mendy is confident of continuing his already impressive progress.

The Frenchman also insists it was Monaco’s negotiating when it came to renewing his contract which put him off staying.

"It is not because of the competition [that I am leaving Monaco].

"That does not scare me. Everywhere I go there will be competition. And it is not the fault of [Claudio] Ranieri. If it was just down to him, I would have stayed.

"It’s just that I disliked many things concerning the renegotiation of my contract."
