New Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has managed to stave off attention in starlet Kevin De Bruyne, with the midfielder given a virtual guarantee for a spot at Stamford Bridge, according to the player’s agent.

De Bruyne’s loan period with Werder Bremen has thrust him into the limelight, with Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund eyeing a swoop after watching him at close quarters last season.

The 21-year-old racked up 33 appearances and scored 10 goals in the league, as interest developed along the lines of him moving to Leverkusen with Andre Schurrle moving the other way.

However, with Leverkusen sporting director Michael Reschke admitting De Bruyne was not available to come, Mourinho has taken it upon himself to put the matter to rest.

The final confirmation appears to have come via a telephone call that Mourinho made to De Bruyne, as revealed by his agent Patrick De Koster.

"Mourinho has called Kevin personally", De Koster told Het Laatste Nieuws. "In that conversation Mourinho clearly suggested that he knows Kevin and has also followed [his displays].

"Mourinho said there is a place for him at Chelsea."

De Bruyne was brought to Chelsea initially in January 2012, and immediately loaned back to his old club RC Genk for four months.

A second loan spell, this time at Werder Bremen, followed in July last year, amid speculation that he was out of favour in London.

However, De Koster added: "Someone like Mourinho only allows a young, talented footballer to not return to Chelsea if he has no plans to keep him there and play him in lots of games."
