Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has no intention of escalating the war-of-words with Chelsea's Jose Mourinho despite the very public fallout over last month's crunch clash.

Vertonghen and Fernando Torres' battle at White Hart Lane in late September's 1-1 draw, saw Mourinho brand the Belgian "a disgrace" for apparent simulation.

Torres earned himself two yellow cards in action against Vertonghen, the second for a clash of heads which Mourinho felt the latter made too much of a meal of.

Vertonghen was today quoted by Voetbal Primeur as saying: "I do not feel the need to be called into a verbal battle. I did my battling on the pitch.

"I started nothing, and we have just been making jokes about all this."

The other war-of-words around the Torres-Vertonghen clash involved Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas.

The Portuguese was incensed over the FA's decision to not add a retrospective ban on Torres, for a "scratch" on Vertonghen that came after the foul which induced the first yellow card.

While Villas-Boas termed the FA inaction "a joke, a farce and a disgrace", while Mourinho responded by accusing Vertonghen of "simulation".

Vertonghen, meanwhile, is preparing for Belgium's World Cup qualifying clash away against Croatia set for this Friday.
