Celtic midfielder Stefan Johansen admits that playing in the Champions League group stage next season is of the utmost importance for him and the team.

Celtic have already secured the Scottish league title this season, their third league title in a row and overall their 45th league success.

Johansen has stressed the importance of playing in the Champions League next season as a player, and for a team of Celtic’s stature to compete in Europe in the company of top European teams.

“The Champions League is very important for the club.

"You gain experience and play with some really good players, so it can only make me a better player”, the Norwegian told the club’s official site.

The 23-year-old wants the club to finish the season strongly and prepare for the Champions League qualifiers and do their best to go through to the group stage.

“First of all we’ve got to finish this season and then start our preparations for the Champions League qualifiers, and we want to qualify for the third year in a row.”

Celtic won their maiden and only European Cup in 1967 when they beat Inter Milan 2-1 at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon.

Sandro Mazzola converted a penalty in the seventh minute to give the Italians the lead. It was cancelled out by Thomas Gemmell’s 62nd minute strike and Stevie Chalmers scored a late winner in the 85th minute to win the European Cup for the Scots.
