Liverpool legend Terry McDermott believes that Steven Gerrard should be ranked alongside Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish as club icons.

A Gerrard penalty double on Sunday against West Ham secured a vital three points for Liverpool, sending the side back to the top of the Premier League table.

It also moved the midfielder up to sixth in the club's all-time goalscorers list, with 173 goals in 663 appearances.

For McDermott, there is little doubt Gerrard is a legend, with the only debate being just how highly he should be ranked in the pantheon of club greats.

And the former midfielder feels that Gerrard should be at the very top.

"Gerrard is in the same sentence for me as Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan", he told the club's site.

"He is Mr Liverpool and I love watching him play.

"He is wholehearted, he gives everything for the red shirt every game and he can do everything.

"In fact I can't think of anything he can't do and I wouldn't be surprised if he's very good in goal as well."

Gerrard has never won the Premier League title during his career, but is aiming to end that drought this year and looks perfectly placed with Liverpool top of the pile at present.
