Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has expressed his disappointment at failing to go through to the semi-finals of the Champions League last night.

Borussia Dortmund put up a spirited performance when they beat Real Madrid 2-0 at the Westfalenstadion, but lost the tie 3-2 on aggregate and failed to progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.

Mkhitaryan believes that based on last night’s performance against Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund would have been deserving semi-finalists but failure to convert chances in the second half cost them the tie.

“We started the game really well and scored two goals in the first half. We had a lot of chances in the second half as well but we were unlucky”, the Armenian told UEFA’s official site.

“I think we played really well, though, and we would have deserved a place in the semi-finals.”

The 25-year-old lamented the fact that BVB were so close to pulling off a miracle last night, but failed to score the third goal that would have taken the game to extra-time.

“We showed that the impossible can be possible but unfortunately we weren't able to see it through. We just lacked that extra five per cent or so.

“If we'd have got the third goal that would have taken it to extra time, but we were just lacking as a team and I personally should have done better with one or two chances.”

Borussia Dortmund made the final of the Champions League last season, but lost a closely fought match against their German rivals Bayern Munich 2-1.

Mario Mandzukic opened the scoring in the 60th minute which was cancelled out in the 68th minute when Ilkay Gundogan converted a penalty. BVB hearts were broken by Arjen Robben when he scored a late winner in the 89th minute.
