Everton boss Roberto Martinez feels that the focus needed to reach the top four in the Premier League table is the same as the concentration required to avoid the bottom three.

The Spanish manager, who joined the Goodison Park club from Wigan Athletic after David Moyes’ departure to Manchester United in the summer last year, had been battling relegation at this point in the season with the Latics.

But the boss has had a change of fortune this time around as the Blues, currently fifth in the league table, are now fighting with Arsenal for a Champions League spot, and Martinez believes that the key is to take one game at a time.

“I think it is exactly the same, if I am completely honest”, he was quoted as saying by ITV.

“It is being able to focus on the game itself, understanding the intensity and the focus you need in every action.

“In every season, whatever you are playing for, it comes down to the final points you are playing for: whether it is for staying in the league, making the top four or winning the title it is exactly the same”, the 40-year-old continued.

“Looking back at other seasons with Wigan, we managed to get seven wins out of the last nine and that is the same intensity you need to have in any aim you are fighting for.”

Everton are just one point behind Arsene Wenger’s men, and with games against title contenders Manchester City and defending champions Manchester United still lined up, they will have to put their best foot forward when they face Sunderland and Crystal Palace over the next two weeks.
