Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs does not believe a failure to trust in homegrown talents should be read into the club's sale of Danny Welbeck to Arsenal.

The Red Devils offloaded Welbeck, a player produced in their youth academy, to Arsenal for £16m before the transfer window closed, bringing in Radamel Falcao as a replacement.

Questions were instantly raised over the willingness of Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal to promote and trust youth products.

But Giggs insists the Dutchman is still committed to blooding youngsters and his record stands as testament to that, with spells at Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, when future stars were handed a chance.

Giggs told the Soccerex convention in Manchester: "OK Danny has left, which is obviously disappointing because you never want to see a homegrown player leave, but this is a manager who gave [Clarence] Seedorf his chance, [Patrick] Kluivert his chance, [Andres] Iniesta his chance, Xavi, Thomas Muller – he has got a track record of giving youngsters a chance.

"Tyler Blackett has played every game this season.

"Underneath [Robin] van Persie and [Wayne] Rooney you have got [Adnan] Januzaj, James Wilson. Players will leave but we have got to make sure young players come through because United fans demand it.

"I want to see young players come through. That has been [the pattern] right through the history of Manchester United and we never want to lose that."
