Liverpool are set to feel the financial pinch as a result of missing out on qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Reds could find no way past Swiss giants Basel last night, only able to draw 1-1 at Anfield, and have now slipped into the Europa League, while their opponents march into the Champions League last 16.

The amount in income generated by being in the Europa League is just a fraction of that offered in the Champions League and Liverpool will be affected in the new year.

The Reds have earned £8.4m from the Champions League so far, without TV income, which is calculated later.

They would have received £2.7m in prize money from reaching the last 16, along with more TV income.

A quarter-final spot meanwhile would have needed a further £3m in prize money. Progression to the semi-final and the final would have yielded similar windfalls.

By contrast, should Liverpool win the Europa League, they would receive just £5.5m, although with changes to the rules they would also qualify for next season's Champions League.
