Motherwell manager Mark McGhee thinks Aberdeen’s 2-1 win over Partick Thistle on Tuesday may provide the Dons with the belief to pip Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title this season.

Aberdeen came from behind to beat Partick Thistle at Firhill Stadium, courtesy of late goals from Andrew Considine and Simon Church after the hosts took a 60th minute lead through Steven Lawless.

The win helped the Dons to consolidate second place in the standings, with Derek McInnes’s team now being just one point adrift of Celtic, albeit having played a game more than the reigning champions.

And with the teams still to face each other once this season, McGhee, who has played for both Celtic and Aberdeen, thinks the title race is very much on between his two former sides.

“I think Celtic should certainly be looking over their shoulder”, McGhee was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland.

“I hope Aberdeen do have a belief that they can go and win it – because they deserve to feel like that.

"I would expect after the turnaround last night that they will be using it as a psychological launch-pad. They will say, 'This is what we have got in us…we can do this'.

"Aberdeen have got to be really rolling up the sleeves and looking the possibilities. If they win every game they will have a good chance of winning the league. That's a fact.

"They will have to beat Celtic along the way to do it but that's what is there for them. They have to set their stall out and say, 'That's what we are going to do'.

“It's up to the rest of us to try and get our points. We have both of them to play and I'll be trying to beat Aberdeen and Celtic – and have a neutral outcome.”

Celtic, who are gunning for their fifth consecutive Scottish Premiership title, will next face Partick Thistle in an away league game on Saturday.
