West Ham co-chairman David Gold has revealed his disappointment at seeing Ian Ayre stepping down from his role at Liverpool, dubbing the departing CEO one of the brightest men in football.

The Reds have announced that Ayre is on his way out of the club, and will step down from the chief executive’s role at the end of next season.

Ayre joined Liverpool as their commercial director in 2007, and helped the club to remain stable after Fenway Sports Group took the reins at Anfield in 2010.

He was promoted to the chief executive’s role in 2013, but he will step down from that role in May 2017, and Gold is sad to see one of the ‘nicest man in football’, leaving Liverpool in close to an year’s time.

The West Ham co-chairman wrote on Twitter: “I'm really sorry to hear that the Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre is to step down in May 2017.
