Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld feels Kevin Wimmer has done well to replace the injured Jan Vertonghen in the starting eleven this season.

The Austrian centre-half joined Spurs from 1.FC Koln last summer, but only got an opportunity to feature regularly in the team once first choice defender Vertonghen suffered a knee injury earlier this year.

Wimmer has done well to soften the blow of losing the towering Belgian centre-half, and has formed a stable partnership with Alderweireld to keep Spurs honest at the back.

Alderweireld has been impressed with the consistent showing of his defensive partner, and feels Wimmer is a quality defender, who is finally getting the opportunity to show his powers regularly.

And he also added that the Austrian is a good lad off the pitch, which has helped him to form the on field partnership with the defender.

Speaking to Spurs TV, the Tottenham defender said: “It is not easy to replace Jan, because he is a very good player.

“I think he has done well; he is quiet young yet and he is very eager to learn. He has a lot of quality, and he shows that every week.

“We try to talk a lot and help each other. He is a very nice guy off the pitch, so it makes easier to know each other.

“I think we are doing great.”

Wimmer has made 18 senior appearances for the club, and also has two Austria caps to his name.
