Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has insisted that he felt sorry for the Whites faithful after the club went down 4-1 to Huddersfield Town in a Championship game at the weekend.
Steve Evans’ team, who headed into the Yorkshire derby on the back of three successive league wins, took a 22nd minute lead at Elland Road, courtesy of Stuart Dallas’ strike.
However, the visitors came back strongly and equalised in the 41st minute before striking three more times after the break to record a memorable win over Leeds.
And Whelan, who felt Leeds put in a “mentally poor performance” against Huddersfield, explained that his former team were outplayed in every department by the Terriers.
“The second half in particular was very lacklustre and soft, and, overall, it was a mentally poor performance and I don’t think anyone came out of it with any credit and no- one could come off the pitch feeling like they had done a job”, he wrote in his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“We didn’t match Huddersfield anywhere across the field and it was sad to see.
“I felt sorry for nearly 30,000 fans who turned up to see a very poor and weak performance.”
Leeds, who are currently 13th in the Championship table with 47 points from 37 games, will next face 20th-placed Rotherham United in an away league fixture after the international break on 2nd April.
The Yorkshire giants lost the corresponding fixture 1-0 at Elland Road in November.
