Chelsea legend Pat Nevin has pointed out that if the Blues had managed to win just three further league games this season then they would be battling for a spot in the Champions League.

The defending Premier Leaue champions are currently reeling in a lowly tenth position, having won a mere 10 league games out of the 30 they have played so far.

They are nine points behind West Ham United, and Manchester United, both of whom are competing for a place in the top four.

And Nevin feels that a win in three more games would have put the Blues right up there with the Hammers and the Red Devils fighting for a spot in the Champions League next year.

Though the season has been a highly disappointing one for the Stamford Bridge club, the ex-winger feels that it was the drawn games that have hurt their chances the most.

"We are still right in the middle of the league table with only eight games to go", Nevin explained on Chelsea's official site.

What is maybe surprising is that in what is a very disappointing season, had Chelsea won a measly three of the games we lost then we would have been level on points with West Ham and Manchester United, well placed to get back into the Champions League again”, the former winger continued.

"More realistically, it is the statistic of eight drawn games since Christmas, squandering 16 possible points, that has hurt us the most.

“They do say the league table never lies in the end but it is actually quite small margins that have kept us from making a late charge."

Chelsea played out a 2-2 home draw with West Ham in their last Premier League match, coming from behind to claim a share of the spoils at Stamford Bridge.
