Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan thinks the Whites should not rest on their laurels as they are still not mathematically safe from relegation down to League One.

Steve Evans’ team, who were thrashed 4-1 by Huddersfield Town before the international break, presently find themselves 13th in the standings with 47 points from 37 outings.

Although Leeds are currently 10 points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand, Whelan has warned his former club against taking the fear of going down to League One lightly.

However, the 41-year-old was quick to add that Leeds should aim to finish as high in the league as possible with nine Championship fixtures remaining in the season.

“I don’t think anybody should be resting and thinking they are safe until it’s actually mathematically sealed that you can’t go down", he was quoted as saying by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“You’ve got to keep playing for every single point until the end of the season and it’s about where we can finish as well.

“You want to finish as high up the league as possible and that should be the aim for the Leeds United players – where can we finish the season? How good are we?”

Leeds, who finished the 2014/15 campaign in 15th spot, will next take on Rotherham United in an away league game on Saturday.
