Rangers forward Martyn Waghorn is optimistic he will be able to play some part in the Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic later this month.

The 26-year-old forward was in a wonderful goalscoring form for the Gers until he suffered a knee injury in mid-February, and has been on the recovery path since then.

While Rangers have been beaten just once in Waghorn’s absence, Mark Warburton is keen to get his top marksman back in the squad, especially ahead of the Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic.

And Waghorn revealed that if his recovery goes as scheduled, he should be ready to play a part for Rangers in only the second Old Firm derby since 2012, when the Gers suffered liquidation.

However, he added that he won’t want to take any chances with his injury and try to rush through his recovery just to play against Celtic, if he is not 100 per cent sure.

The forward told the club’s official website: “If everything goes well then there is a chance I could be involved against Celtic but that is just if everything goes spot on.

“I have to be 100% ready – I want to push myself but I don’t want to push myself too far in case we get further on in the competition or rule myself out of the latter stages of the season.

“So I’ll push myself but I have to be cautious too.”

Despite the injury, Waghorn remains Rangers’ top scorer this season, with 28 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions.
