Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits that Bastian Schweinsteiger’s knee injury is a big blow for the team, but has delivered positive news on Wayne Rooney’s recovery.

While most of the Manchester United players returned unscathed from the international break, Schweinsteiger suffered a serious knee injury and is now expected to be out for the season.

Van Gaal admits that the Germany captain’s absence is a serious blow to the squad, and has conceded that the injury is as serious as the one Rooney suffered in February.

"It is a big blow", he told MUTV when asked about Schweinsteiger’s injury.

"He is starting his rehabilitation. He has more or less the same injury as Wayne. We have to see how it heals."

"He's [Rooney] doing great. He trained today at a lower level with the ball and will probably play an Under-21s match before he comes back.

"Luke Shaw will be back on the training pitch on Monday with the physio.

"Ander Herrera and Ashley Young are coming back. Young and Adnan Januzaj played with the Reserves in a match on the Friday of the international break."

Manchester United won the local derby against Manchester City before the break, and will be looking to pick up from where they left when they host Everton on Sunday.
