Former Bayern Munich and Liverpool defender Markus Babbel believes that Mario Gotze left Borussia Dortmund for Bayern Munich too soon, especially as Jurgen Klopp was "besotted" with the midfielder.

Gotze has struggled to make an impact at the Allianz Arena and has increasingly been linked with a summer exit from the German champions, with a reunion with former Dortmund boss Klopp at Liverpool mooted as a possibility.

The attacking midfielder seemed set for big things when he joined the Bavarians and admits that even at the time he did not understand the move, with Gotze working under a coach who was his biggest fan.

"I didn't understand the transfer to FC Bayern then", Babbel said on Sky90.

"If I go to Bayern at that age then I have to think about it beforehand", he continued.

"In addition he was with a top team and he had a manager who was really besotted with him."

And for Babbel, the move to Bayern Munich came too soon in Gotze's career.

"For me, the change came too early", the former defender explained.

Babbel had two spells at Bayern Munich, first coming through the youth ranks at the club and remaining until a 1992 switch to Hamburg. He then returned to the Bavarians in 1994.

The German joined Liverpool in 2000, being part of the side that won a treble of trophies in 2001.
