Leeds United head coach Steve Evans has insisted that it is too early to write off Giuseppe Bellusci after a couple of errors.

The Italian defender has made two costly mistakes in the last two games to squander points for Leeds United, and has been the subject of furious criticism from all quarters because of the errors.

The 26-year-old has been blamed for Leeds losing points in the last two games, but Evans has continued to back the player in public, despite his recent errors.

Bellusci has been tipped to lose his starting spot against Burnley on Saturday and while Evans indicated that it could happen, he insisted that it doesn’t mean the club can write off the defender.

He stressed that players do go through lean spells, and have shown they can come back into the team with strong performances.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, the Scot said: “We never write players off at any stage.

“We have seen here as well – young Mustapha [Carayol] had to sit out for couple of weeks then he played, [Luke] Murphy also had to sit out for a few weeks, and then play.

"Sometimes when players don’t do well, we don’t write them off as they are here for a reason.

“Giuseppe is a good player, and it is very important that his head coach retains that belief in him.”

Despite publicly backing the defender, Evans may well choose to drop Bellusci for his side’s trip to Burnley this weekend.
