Rangers manager Mark Warburton has insisted that people need to recognise that there is still a considerable gap in quality between his side and the Celtic squad.
The Gers won the Scottish Championship title and with it promotion to the Premiership when they beat Dumbarton on Tuesday night at Ibrox.
Scottish football is looking forward to the resumption of regular Old Firm derbies from next season in the top tier, but the two sides will be meeting in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden later this month.
While challenging Celtic’s hegemony again is Rangers’ long term goal, Warburton admits that they need to be a little more cautious as he feels his side are still not at that level.
Though he wants Rangers to give a good account of themselves against the Scottish champions in the cup semi-final, he conceded that there still lies a considerable gap in quality between the teams, which his side need some time to breach.

The Rangers boss was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland: “We’ve won the league, we’ve got the Petrofac – all we then need to do is go in there and deliver the performance.
“But we’re not losing sight of the fact that Celtic have had four, five, six years of Champions League football. They’ve got a squad packed with international players.
“And our job is to recognise where we are at the moment – and look to close that gap.”
Rangers and Celtic share 100 Scottish top tier league championships between them, with the Gers winning 54 of them.
