Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler considers the EFL Cup to be a major trophy as he feels winning it provides players with the right attitude and mentality to taste further success.
The Reds, who were beaten by in the final of the domestic cup competition on penalties by Manchester City last season, have managed to reach the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, where they will face Championship outfit Leeds United on Tuesday night.
During his time at Liverpool, Fowler managed to win the competition twice, with the former striker’s first trophy at Anfield also incidentally being the League Cup, now rechristened the EFL Cup.
And the 41-year-old, who joined Leeds from Liverpool in 2001, believes lifting the EFL Cup would whet the Reds players’ appetite to win other trophies.

“It whets your appetite, certainly at a club as big as Liverpool”, he told the club’s official site.

“You base yourselves on what you’ve won. I was lucky enough to win trophies, and once you do win one it makes you want to perform better in other cup competitions and leagues.
“It is a major trophy.
"I was lucky enough to win it and it gives the players the right attitude and the winning mentality.
"I’ve always looked at it like that. I think it’s massive.
“It was the first trophy I won and I’ll always hold it in high esteem.
"It sets you up, it sets the fans up, and sets everyone up to go on and win others.”
Liverpool, who beat Sunderland 2-0 at the weekend to consolidate second spot in the Premier League, edged out Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in the previous round of the EFL Cup in late October.
