Rangers suffered a 2-0 defeat at Ibrox on Thursday night at the hands of Slavia Prague and bowed out of the Europa League at the last 16 stage.

It was their first loss in Europe this season and despite some fighting football, Slavia Prague were dangerous over the two legs and put Rangers to the sword.

However, Stewart believes Rangers could have got the better of the Czech side had they managed to impose their football on them over the two legs a little bit more.

He insisted that there is not much of a difference between the two sides, but stressed that the defeat will add more fuel to Rangers’ burning desire to do better in Europe next season.

Stewart said on BBC Sportsound: “I still do think that if Rangers had been able to impose their game a bit more, then they were capable of beating Slavia there.

“That tie was a 50-50 tie, it really was. It was a toss of a coin, two sides who were very closely matched.

“So it’s disappointing there is no doubt about it, but it should give them a good bit of fuel to fire them on next season as well.”

Rangers stumbled in the last 16 stage of the Europa League last season as well at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen.
