Toffees boss Frank Lampard has been working closely with director of football Kevin Thelwell to plot Everton’s player recruitment strategy in the summer, and centre-back is a position he wants to bolster

James Tarkowski, who is out of contract at Burnley next month, is Everton’s top target and they have already handed him a contract offer.

However, the Merseyside giants are also exploring alternative options to Tarkowski, as he is also subject of strong interest from Aston Villa, and have several other centre-backs on their transfer radar.

And Brentford star Ajer is one of the names admired at Everton as they continue to look for centre-back targets.

The former Celtic man only joined the Bees last summer and managed to impress in his first season in the Premier League.

But Ajer is contracted at Brentford until the summer of 2026, and his potential asking price could prove to be a stumbling block for Everton should they decide to push to land him in the upcoming window.

Everton have no less than five options at centre back at present, but Yerry Mina’s future is under the scanner, while teenager Jarrod Brathwaite could be sent out on loan next season
