The 22-year-old defender has had an agreement in place with AC Milan for several months over a contract but the negotiations have stalled between the Rossoneri and Lille.

The stalemate has given Newcastle the opening they needed to get back into the race and they have offered more in terms of wages to the Dutchman.

Botman is still prioritising a move to the Rossoneri but it has been claimed that personal terms are in place between Newcastle and his representatives.

But the Serie A giants remain committed to signing him and according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it, they have put in an official bid for the defender.

AC Milan are in direct contact with Lille and have offered a deal worth up to €33m this summer.

The French club have a good relationship with AC Milan but are insistent on getting around €40m from Botman’s sale.

Lille would also prefer to sell him to Newcastle as the Premier League club are prepared to meet their asking price.

However, AC Milan remain keen to get a deal over the line for Botman and have continued to hold talks with Lille.

Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in him with their new sporting director Luis Campos identifying the Dutchman as a target.
