Barcelona have an agreement in place over a fee with Manchester United to sell the midfielder to the Premier League giants this summer.
De Jong’s public stance has been to stay at Barcelona, but Manchester United remain confident that the player wants the move to Old Trafford.
However, he is still at Barcelona and the Dutchman staying is likely to create several problems for the Catalan giants ahead of next season.
According to Catalan daily Mundo Deportivo, De Jong staying would create headaches for Barcelona this summer.
De Jong’s salary would put a burden of between €30m and €35m on Barcelona and the Catalans do not want to pay that.
Barcelona would struggle to register new players if the Dutchman insists on staying at the Nou Camp next season.
They would also have less funds to bring in more players given they are counting on the transfer fee they could get from his departure.
Manchester United believe once the deferred payments issue is sorted out between Barcelona and De Jong the deal will happen.
However, if De Jong accepts an adjustment to his salary, he could remain at Barcelona.
