Magpies boss Eddie Howe is keen on taking Gordon to St James’ Park, but Newcastle are watching their transfer budget closely as they look to make it stretch.

Newcastle are prepared to pay £25m plus add-ons to sign Gordon, however that is not enough for Everton, who have their own transfer chases to fund.

It is claimed that Newcastle would need to pay at least £40m to be able to land Gordon.

Everton are keen on Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet, Wolves’ Morgan Gibbs-White and Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters.

Selling Gordon would help Frank Lampard to pursue those players, but Newcastle will have to dig deeper if they are to be able to take the attacker to the north east.

Newcastle however are not keen to overpay and are prepared to move to alternative targets if they cannot land Gordon for a fee they consider to be reasonable.

Gordon clocked the full 90 minutes in Everton’s 1-0 win over Newcastle at Goodison Park in March.
