The Scot took charge of Sunderland’s defeat to Norwich on Saturday after Neil left the club to become the new manager at Stoke.
Neil shocked Sunderland and their players when he agreed to take up the Stoke job towards the end of last week.
Stoke triggered a release clause in his contract and his appointment was confirmed on Sunday.
And it has been claimed that Canning will now join Neil as part of his coaching staff soon after leaving Sunderland.
He became Neil’s assistant at Hamilton Academical for the first time and they have remained together since then.
The new Stoke boss was clear about wanting his long-term assistant by his side at the bet365 Stadium as well.
Sunderland are now in the market for a new manager and are keen to sort out an appointment as soon as possible.
